Florida officials have discovered that 180,000 registered voters may be non-citizens.

A CBS4/Miami Herald analysis of information supplied by Miami-Dade shows a large number of the potential non-citizens voters cast ballots in the past — including the 2000 election, when the presidency was decided by just over 500 votes.

According to Deputy Supervisor of Elections Christina White, there are a “lot of non-citizens on our registration rolls.”

Florida’s Division of Elections is checking the citizenship of voters by comparing drivers license records, which show whether a licensed driver is also a U.S. citizen.

Non-citizens are able to become registered voters in Florida because if a non-citizen checks the box on the voter registration form that says they are a citizen they are registered to vote, because the form is signed under oath.

Those registered who are identified as possible non-citizens are reported to the State Attorney’s office The States Attorney may charge anyone who unlawfully registered to vote with a felony.

According to the Heritage Foundation’s Hans Von Spakovsky, Florida’s investigation is only looking at legal immigrants, not illegal aliens, who may have registered to vote even though they are not citizens. Von Spakovsky, a former member of the Federal Elections Commission, says that Florida is doing the right thing with this investigation, but is only scratching the surface. Florida can’t check for illegal aliens who registered to vote because the Federal government is not giving Florida access to Immigration and Naturalization Service records which would help identify illegals who have registered to vote.

You can watch Bill Hemmer and Hans Von Spakovsky discuss Florida’s investigation of non-citizens illegally voting in the accompanying video here.

Nearly four years after CNN reported on the scandalous ACORN voter fraud, and those fraudulent voter registrations were converted into fraudulent votes, we are still struggling to prevent voter fraud. Instead of working to prevent voter fraud, the Obama regime goes so far as to sue some states that require voters to show a photo ID in order to vote.

Incumbent Republican Steve Davis announced he is running for his fifth House term in the new District 109, which covers parts of Rockdale, Newton and Henry counties.

“It has been a great honor to represent this district for the last eight years and I am glad that I have been able to deliver on the promises of my original campaign,” Davis said in a written statement. “I have focused much of my attention on education, transportation and public safety.”

He said his experience and committee seats makes him better able to serve voters. “I believe I’m sitting in a place that would be in the best interest of all the voters to keep,” he said. “There’s still a lot of work to do. I believe this is not the time to try and retrain someone and give up the experience and leadership.”

Davis serves as Chairman of the Information and Audits and is a member on the Appropriations, Insurance, Transportation, State Planning and Community Affairs, State Institutions and Properties Committees.

Davis, a real estate developer, counts an education bill as one of his proudest achievements. HB 186, passed in 2011, requires students to map out “career pathways” among other things.

“I think it’s one of the crowning achievements in my eight years – that College and Career Readiness bill. It has so many things,” he said. “That puts more emphasis on workforce skills in high school coursework. We felt as though our job is not just to teach them to read and write but to give them marketable skills when they get out in the workforce.”

He said he supports the referendum to amend the state Constitution on charter school creation by the state.

Transportation has been a focal point of his work in Henry County. “We are still way behind on infrastructure,” regarding high growth areas in metro-Atlanta, said Davis.

On the upcoming referendum for the regional transportation penny sales tax, or TSPLOST, Davis said he has no stance. “It’s up to the voters to decide.” He said he fought to ensure smaller counties such as Rockdale and Henry would have equal representation at the transportation regional roundtable.

Other work he highlights includes a sex offender registry bill and a bill allowing independent contractors and small businesses to pool together for insurance purposes.

The newly drawn House District 109 picks up the Magnet and Barksdale precincts in Rockdale and Downs and Livingston precincts in Newton while shifting out of Henry County on the west. Davis said he was pleased with the redistricting.

Henry County businessman Dale Rutledge recently announced his bid for the Republican nomination for District 109.

Davis said he is no stranger to facing challengers. He faced Republican, Democratic and Libertarian challengers in his first election in 2004 and a primary or general election challenger each term since.

Davis and his wife Melissa have three children and live in Kelleytown area of Henry County.

His campaign will host a fundraising “grill-out” and meet and greet on May 9, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at JP Mosely Park, 1042 Millers Mill Road, Stockbridge.

In politics, truth-telling can get you into trouble, even if you stumble upon it by accident. Just ask Rep. Allen West (R-FL).West is feeling the heat for a pregnant pause he took during a town hall meeting after he was asked “What percentage of the American legislature do you think are card-carrying Marxists or International Socialists?”"It’s a good question,” West responded, “I believe there’s [sic] about 78 to 81 members of the Democrat Party who are members of the Communist Party. (Long pause) “They don’t actually hide. It’s called the Congressional Progressive Caucus.” The left became unhinged.Obviously West touched a nerve; before long, members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) drafted their response: “Calling fellow Members of Congress ‘Communists’ is reminiscent of the days when Joe McCarthy divided Americans with name-calling and modern-day witch hunts that don’t advance policies to benefit people’s lives…”The CPC’s response is just another sign of the political times we live in. But something about their argument doesn’t pass the “smell test.”While there may not be large numbers of card-carrying communists lining the halls of Congress, there is a clear tie between the Democratic Party’s Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), Communist Party USA (CPUSA), and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

It really boils down to marketing. In marketing, many times the same product is given a different name or label in order to increase its appeal to certain groups. Names are sometimes changed due to the product’s connection to other products, or the public’s association to a prior name.

Although Progressive share much in common with CPUSA and DSA, they are shrewd enough to understand the terms “communist” or “socialist” are unpalatable for most Americans. Hence, the word “Progressive” was injected into American political verbiage. While the words are not interchangeable, one thing is for sure: The CPC is doing its part to further the goals of modern Communists and Socialists who have found a voice in the Democratic Party.

In 2002, Communist Party USA PAC leader Joelle Fishman reported CPUSA uses the Congressional Progressive Caucus as “an important lever” to “move the debate to the left.” A February 2, 2010 Communist Party USA article “Convention Discussion: A Time to Grow” explained they plan to meet their goals by running for office “within the auspices of the Democratic Party” because “conditions rarely if ever allow us to run open Communists for office.”

The same article praised Obama’s election asserting, “We have the opportunity to build something big, a large, influential and effective Communist Party USA. After the incredible movement to elect Barack Obama, more far-reaching solutions and socialism in particular are back at the dinner table for discussion.”

It seems they are moving toward attaining their goals. Obama’s election, in conjunction with Progressives cannibalizing the Democratic Party by ousting common sense Blue Dogs, aided in a severe shift to the left. Americans have witnessed the deterioration of this nation by way of the same type of race-baiting and class warfare Communism cannot exist without.

Unbecoming to an American president, Obama has led the charge in attacks against job-creators, extended the olive branch to “99 Percent” anarchists, and publicly castigated the third (and his equal) branch of government. Americans have had zero control over the appointments of unsavory anti-capitalist cabinet members like former “Green Czar” and avowed Communist Van Jones.

All things considered, “Washington’s newest breath of fresh air,” West, is dead-on in his assessment of Democratic Party Progressives. West once said Progressive’s should take their message “and get the hell out of America.” I think most of us would be happy if they would just “get the hell out of” the Democratic Party and run on their own ticket.

Governor Deal Signs HB 397 into Law

Yesterday Gov. Nathan Deal signed HB 397 into law. The law is a comprehensive re-write of Georgia’s Open Meetings and Open Records Acts. The bill won sweeping, bipartisan approval by the General Assembly this year. The new law is now in effect.

I appreciate Gov. Deal demonstrating his support of government transparency by signing HB 397, which clarifies and strengthens Georgia’s Open Meetings and Open Records Laws. I am also deeply grateful to the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Jay Powell, and all of the stakeholders who worked tirelessly to craft a law that is fair and balanced. The new law does the following:

Makes clear that final votes must be taken in public, including on real estate transactions;

Clarifies and streamlines how government officials must respond to a request;

Lowers the cost of records from 25 cents to 10 cents a page;

Enables government to act more efficiently by permitting certain meetings by teleconference in emergency situations;

Requires minutes in closed meetings with review by a court when a challenge is filed;

Allows the Attorney General to bring civil or criminal actions against violators;

Increases fines for violations to a maximum of $1000, and up to $2500 for additional violations within a year; (Prior fines were a maximum of $100 for an Open Records violation and a maximum of $500 for an Open Meetings violation)

Updates language regarding trade secrets and electronic documents to ensure transparency is not compromised by technological advances; and

Incorporates various court rulings to simplify the law.

I appreciate the many hours Rep. Powell dedicated to perfecting the bill and shepherding it through the legislative process. It was a pleasure to work with all of the dedicated stakeholders, including the Georgia Press Association, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the First Amendment Foundation, ACCG, GMA, and many other key groups. Their tireless efforts ensured that the final product was a fair and balanced law that will serve all Georgians well.

The 2012 session of the Georgia General Assembly saw many additional key and productive bills pass the General Assembly that will be signed into law in the coming months.

HB 237: Presently, Georgia law only criminalizes fraud during the mortgage process, but specifically does not penalize similar fraud in the foreclosure process. HB 237, sponsored by Rep. Rich Golick, will make foreclosure fraud a crime in Georgia. During the recent housing crisis, foreclosure fraud has been an enormous problem in our state, but we have not had the tools to prosecute abuse. HB 237 will offer new protections to Georgia borrowers during every stage of the lending process and provide the tools necessary prosecute misconduct.

SB 181: SB 181, sponsored by Senators Charlie Bethel and Tommie Williams, makes clear that prosecutors may not hire private lawyers on a contingency-fee basis to handle civil forfeiture cases. I issued a letter last year stating that the practice runs contrary to the national standards governing state prosecutors and may constitute a due process violation of the U.S. and Georgia constitutions. The legislation, which was introduced last year, says that no lawyer hired to prosecute forfeitures can be paid “on a contingent basis from proceeds arising in or resulting from a forfeiture action” or under “an hourly or fixed fee arrangement that is contingent from proceeds” from the case. This ensures that the exercise of prosecutorial authority, even in the civil arena, will remain fully motivated by the interests of justice and not personal financial gain.

I am pleased that the Law Department has had a successful legislative session with the passage of several key pieces of legislation that will better protect or citizens and improve our government. I appreciate the strong support of our legislative priorities by Gov. Nathan Deal and the House and Senate leadership. I am also proud of the great work of the dedicated lawyers of in our office, who contributed much time and effort during the session.

Dear Friends,

It may be hard to believe, but we are now just 10 days away from electing over half of our Party’s Delegates and Alternates to serve in Georgia’s Delegation at the 2012 Republican National Convention! On Saturday, April 14th, each of Georgia’s 14 Congressional District Republican Committees will host their respective District Conventions.

Per the bylaws of the Georgia Republican Party, each of our Districts is allotted three Delegates and three Alternates to the Republican National Convention – totaling 42 Delegates and 42 Alternates – and may also send additional At-Large Delegates and Alternates who will be elected at the GAGOP State Convention on May 18th and 19th. For more information on your District’s Convention, please contact your GAGOP District Chairman by visiting: http://www.gagop.org/local/districts/.

In addition to serving in the Georgia Delegation to the Republican National Convention, there are many ways that you can get involved with the Georgia Republican Party’s Convention process.

Greetings,

House Republicans took charge of wasteful spending last week by passing a responsible budget to restore and revitalize our economy. Unlike President Obama’s budget, the House Republicans’ plan cuts spending by $5.3 trillion over the next decade, reduces the size of government, reforms the tax code, saves the Medicare program for the millions of Americans who depend on it, and lowers the corporate tax rate to bring businesses back to the United States. And it accomplishes all of this without a dime of tax increases for any American—a stark contrast to President Obama’s budget—which saddles taxpayers with an additional $1.9 trillion to pay for this administration’s out-of-control spending. To watch my floor statement in support of the FY’ 2013 Republican Budget Resolution, visit my YouTube page.

In both an exciting and historical time for Americans, the Supreme Court began reviewing the constitutionality of President Obama’s health care law last week. This is a critical time for our nation, and I sincerely hope that the Supreme Court rules Obamacare unconstitutional so that Congress can work together to enact meaningful and sustainable health care reforms. On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to sit in on the last day of oral arguments at the Supreme Court and I took a few photos while I was there. To view the pictures, visit my website. For an overview of last week’s hearings, read my latest blog post.

After the event, he even took time out of his busy meet and great schedule to talk with GSUGOP members and pose for a few pictures.
GAGOP Chairman Everhart Statement on the 2012 Georgia General Assembly Legislative Session

ATLANTA – Georgia Republican Party Chairman Sue P. Everhart released the following statement upon the completion of the 2012 Georgia General Assembly Legislative Session:“I would like to congratulate Governor Nathan Deal, Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle and Speaker David Ralston, along with all of our Republican leadership and legislators, for the completion of the 2012 Georgia General Assembly Legislative Session. Over the past three months, the Republican-led State Senate and House have worked tirelessly on behalf of the citizens of the great State of Georgia, and I truly believe that this year’s Session was among the most successful in our legislature’s storied history.“Significant advancements were made during the 2012 Legislative Session that will protect and advance the interests of Georgia’s students, small business owners, taxpayers, workers and so many others. I am pleased to recognize the remarkable efforts of our Republican legislators, and will proudly stand behind the achievements of this year’s General Assembly. As we move towards the 2012 Election Cycle, it is ever-more clear to the voters of Georgia that the Republican Party has fought, and will continue to fight, with nothing but their constituents’ very best interests at heart.

“I look forward to growing our Republican legislative majorities in November and returning for the 2013 Georgia General Assembly Legislative Session with the same passion, determination and impenetrable will to succeed that our Party’s legislators show year after year.”

I will highlight some of the bills I found notable – in no particular order.HB 872passed both chambers and was sent to the Governor for approval. It seeks to deal with the growing problem of metal theft. I was pleased to work with both Rep.

Dear Friends,

As you might have heard, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments over the constitutionality of the president’s health care law this week. I was very pleased by the Court’s decision to review this terribly flawed law, and I have followed this week’s events very closely. In June, we will learn the Court’s decision on some of the major components of the law, including whether the mandate requiring all Americans to purchase health insurance is constitutional.

I am hopeful that the Court will see the president’s health care law as I see it: a terribly flawed, unconstitutional law that seeks to put the government in charge of your health care. I recognize that our health care system is not perfect and that we still have work to do. In the Senate, will continue to work to repeal the law and replace it with market-based solutions to contain the costs of health care and increase patient choice through competition in the private-sector.

No matter the outcome of this ruling, the Obama administration has gone too far. Please help me continue to fight these kinds of government overreaches that limit our freedom by investing $25, $50, $100, $200, $1,000 or $2,000 in my campaign today.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

This week’s Supreme Court hearings on the constitutionality of Obamacare have reminded Americans of the two-year-old law’s intrusion into their lives.

After all, what could be more intrusive than the federal government telling you the type of health care coverage you must purchase, or risk paying a fine?

With this law, the American people have recognized that Congress has exceeded its constitutional authority. Just last week, a poll conducted by the Washington newspaper The Hill found that 49 percent of likely voters believe the Supreme Court will rule against the constitutionality of the health care law, while only 29 percent believe it will be upheld.

The American people have to ask themselves whether we should be able to punish citizens based whether they purchase a product. The Commerce Clause only allows the federal government to regulate “existing activity” that affects interstate commerce. I hope this distinction will be recognized by our justices on the Supreme Court.

With no end in sight to escalating health care costs, Republicans want to see innovation within the private sector to bring about changes to our health care system. Today, Medicare and Medicaid are running up our national debt and bankrupting our states. One would think less government involvement – not more – would help bring health care costs under control.

Legislative Update from State Rep. Jimmy Pruett

As the end of the 2012 Georgia General Assembly Legislative Session draws near, we have worked long hours this week to ensure the passage of vital legislation that will reform both our state’s tax code and criminal justice system.Some of the legislative highlights of this week were:

HB 386, also known as the Georgia Jobs and Family Tax Reform Plan, HB 386 implements a variety of tax reform measures that were recommended by the Special Council on Tax Reform and Fairness for Georgians. In the 15 months since then, we have had time to thoroughly review the findings of the council and develop what is called the Georgia Jobs and Family Tax Reform Plan into House Bill 386, which passed the House this week. This reform will change the way Georgia collects revenue, making our state friendlier to businesses and helping families as they recover from the economic downturn.

Among its many family-friendly tax reform components, HB 386 includes a measure that would eliminate the “birthday tax,” an annual vehicle property tax on cars, trucks and vans that is due on auto owners’ birthdays each year. Instead of paying this annual tax and a state and local sales tax, people purchasing a new or used vehicle after March 1, 2013 would only pay a one-time title fee equal to 6.5 percent of the car’s value. Although this change is not applicable to those currently paying the annual “birthday tax,” those who purchase a vehicle between now and February 2013 would have the option of choosing between the current system and the one-time title fee system. All ve hicles purchased after March 1, 2013 would use the new title fee system.

Attorney General Olens Releases Statement on Monday’s Supreme Court Healthcare Oral Argument

Monday, Attorney General Sam Olens was present as the U.S. Supreme Court heard the first of three days of oral arguments on the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordability Care Act. The topic of today’s argument was the federal Anti-Injunction Act and whether or not it prohibits the plaintiffs from bringing a challenge to the individual mandate at this time. Georgia, the fellow plaintiff states, and the National Federation of Independent Business contend that the individual mandate issue may be resolved now without having to await the assessment of penalties under the Act.Attorney General Olens released the following statement on the argument: “It was an honor to attend today’s oral argument before the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of all Georgia taxpayers,” said Olens. “The lawsuit brought by Georgia and 25 other states is appropriate at this time, and we need not wait until 2014 when the penalties mandated by the President’s federal healthcare plan begin to take effect. The issues at stake are too significant to delay a decision from our Nation’s highest Court.”Click here to view this release online…

Day 2 of Supreme Court Healthcare Oral Argument

This morning, the Supreme Court heard two hours of argument on the constitutionality of the individual mandate—the requirement that individuals obtain health insurance or face a financial penalty. Georgia, along with fellow plaintiffs, argues that Congress lacks constitutional authority to force individuals who are not participating in the insurance market to enter the market and purchase a government-prescribed insurance product. <a title="http://olensforag.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=aaa1705ed8065089f4bca7fcd&id=d4f6498186&e=edd6db00d2

Authority that is not expressly granted to the federal government by the Constitution is left to the states. Nowhere in the Constitution is the federal government given the jurisdiction to force an individual to participate in commerce. If the individual mandate, the linchpin of the law, is not stricken, there are no conceivable limits on federal power. The idea that the federal government can compel individuals to purchase a product is a radical one and is completely at odds with the Constitution and principle of federalism.

I will be attending the final day of oral arguments in the Supreme Court tomorrow. Tomorrow’s schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, March 28, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

At 10 a.m., the Court will hear 90 minutes on the issue of severability.

At 1 p.m., the Court will hear one hour of argument on expansion of Medicaid programs.

Healthcare Oral Arguments Begin Monday in the Nation’s Highest Court

I am pleased to represent Georgia on Monday as the entire nation watches this historic healthcare reform suit reach the highest court of our country. I, along with 25 other attorneys general, the National Federation of Independent Business and four individual plaintiffs will begin oral arguments to defend Americans’ individual liberty before the U.S. Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has allotted an unprecedented six hours of time for oral argument, which will conclude on Wednesday, March 28. Paul Clement, former U.S. Solicitor General, will argue on behalf of the states. I have the honor of being only one of six attorneys general present for Monday’s argument.

This case raises the most consequential Constitutional question of our lifetime: whether or not the Congress has the power to force individuals to purchase a product. The Constitution clearly places limits on the authority of the federal government, and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act flagrantly exceeds that authority.

Today marks the second anniversary of President Obama signing the healthcare bill into law. This case will determine if the federalist system, as envisioned by our Founding Fathers, remains intact or if there is no limit to the power of the federal government to regulate personal decisions of citizens, such as healthcare.

The argument schedule is as follows:

Monday, March 26, 10 a.m.

The Court will hear 90 minutes of argument on the federal Anti-Injunction Act.

Tuesday, March 27, 10 a.m.

The Court will hear two hours of argument on the constitutionality of the individual mandate.

Wednesday, March 28, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

At 10 a.m., the Court will hear 90 minutes on the issue of severability.

At 1 p.m., the Court will hear one hour of argument on expansion of Medicaid programs.

The Court is expected to issue a decision by the end of June 2012.
Dear Friends,

Last week, I told you that when we don’t show up, we lose. This is as true in life as it is in politics, and far too many people travel through their day by simply voting “present” – just like then-Senator Barack Obama.

It is no secret that it will take nothing short of a full-scale grassroots movement akin to the Election of 2010 in order to defeat Barack Obama and take our country back in November. With presidential approval ratings hovering in the low-40’s, gas prices primed to jump north of $4 per gallon and a national debt with more zeroes than the Obama Administration, our time to strike is now! America is undoubtedly headed in the wrong direction, and we cannot afford to sit idly as the current occupant of the White House continues to fundamentally dismantle the greatest nation on earth.

We must come together as a united Republican front; capable of not only defeating Barack Obama, but also protecting and growing our Republican majorities from Congress to the County Commission and every office in between. The Republican Party, which turned 158 years old this week, was built from the ground up and has sustained due to the persistence, dedication and will of our Republican grassroots.

This week, Georgia’s Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. launched “ObamaCare on Trial,” highlighting the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court hearing on President Obama’s Health Care Overhaul Bill. Says Broun:

On November 14th, 2011 the United States Supreme Court granted writs of certiorari to challenge President Barack Obama’s Health Care Overhaul Bill: ObamaCare. Since it’s passing, I have lead the fight in Congress against Obamacare. As a physician, I assure you that President Obama has misdiagnosed American healthcare and health insurance.

The Supreme Court should rule ObamaCare unconstitutional for one simple reason: There is no Constitutional Authority for it.

The American people deserve healthcare reform that puts us in control of our decisions. We deserve healthcare reform that gets government out of the way of the doctor-patient relationship, and lowers costs while increasing the quality of care. We deserve much better than the massive healthcare takeover that President Obama and his allies forced down our throats.

That is why I am introducing my OPTION Act. It will repeal ObamaCare and replace it with free-market, constitutional solutions. This legislation is what real patient-centered reform should be – a set of transparent and honest reforms that take government out from between you and your doctor. Instead of the incomprehensible 2700 pages of ObamaCare, my bill takes only 112 pages to do the following:

Sue’s Views: House Republicans Return Sanity to Budgeting

For the past three years, Barack Obama has been the anti-budget president. Outside of the distressing trend of his allies in the Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate refusing to pass a budget altogether for well over 1000 days, the president has taken few – if any – steps towards presenting a responsible, coherent or even remotely-balanced budget…Thankfully, today the House Budget Committee and Chairman Paul Ryan have unveiled a plan that, if enacted, would immediately and dramatically begin to right our nation’s economic ship. The Path to Prosperity Budget combines reforms, simplifications and innovation in a way that would fundamentally restore fiscal sanity to the federal government, while simultaneously lifting the unnecessary burdens off of the backs of America’s job creators.

The chart below illustrates the projected trajectories of President Obama’s current budget and the GOP Path to Prosperity Budget. In short, the graph speaks for itself:
