by Mike Lowry

Recently the Atlanta Regional Commission sent out a puff piece titled “Regional Snapshot”. This article explored the “Congestion Cost Per Commuter” arriving at the astounding conclusion that congestion is greater where there are more jobs, and that Atlanta has some of the worst congestion in the country. They calculate the “cost per commuter” at $924 each.
What’s missing from their snapshot is any discussion of what they think we should do about it. They are engaged in a massive promotional effort to get everyone to vote in a 1 percent sales tax to pay for the TIA T-SPLOST list of transportation projects, which is supposed to provide relief for this congestion.
Using their own numbers, here’s what they recommend:
· TIA-AR-037, MARTA North Heavy Rail with a project cost of $6,271 per person
· TIA-CO-035, Enhanced premium transit with a project cost of $14,881 per person
· TIA-CL-006, Clayton County bus service with a project cost of $15,267 per person
· TIA-AR-041, GRTA Express bus with a project cost of $18,842 per person
· TIA-M-023, I-20 East transit corridor investments with a project cost of $38,462 per person
· TIA-AT-004/007, Atlanta Beltline & Streetcar with a project cost of $106,530 per person
· TIA-M-028, Clifton Corridor Transit, with a project cost of $137,255 per person
As I have shown in my prior article “Debunking The Transportation Myths – Part 1″ these projects do absolutely nothing to relieve congestion and in fact they absorb most of the funds needed for congestion relief.
The ARC is not acting in the best interests of the region, but rather pushing the interests of the in-town developers and Kasim Reed. Spending $6 billion and not reducing our $924 per commuter cost at all is not even rational.

Dear Friend,

Tonight, Barack Obama gave his third official State of the Union address. Despite his constant excuses and empty rhetoric, the glaring weaknesses and disastrous effects of his Presidency are now clear for everyone to see. America’s economy is in shambles, its greatness scarred.

We are on the front lines, in the trenches, carrying out our mission to take back America for us and for our children and our grandchildren. We stretch every dollar you give to continue our aggressive education and election programs across Georgia.

I ask you to remember that this is the most critical election of our lifetime and I pray that you will be as generous as you can.

At a time when fiscal responsibility and thrift should be the motto of our County government and it’s elected officials, residents were instead exposed to a campaign by our current Chmn. Oden. Of course, he even mentioned his campaign on Channel 23 right at the last part of the program.

The most predictable issue that Oden was pushing was for the residents of Rockdale to stop thinking of Rockdale as a County and start thinking “regionally” as part of the Metro Atlanta Region (ARC). The push for the continuation of government power was so great that the Chmn. brought in his pitchman from the ARC to push the idea that we need to come together as a region, and oh by the way, our County doesn’t matter as much any more?

The Rockdale Republican Party recognized the dangers of the new transit authority Chmn. Oden boasted he was helping in it’s creation. Voters need to pay special attention to this as if the TSPLOST tax referendum passes in July, we will no longer have a county government to complain to about the taxes we pay as now we have to fight a colossal government giant.

Do your part Rockdale-Don’t let Chmn. Oden and the other “more government” bureaucrats get their wish. Register people to vote, and tell everyone to VOTE NO on July 31 to keep our Georgia Constitutional “Home Rule” provision intact.

Many of the campaigns are revving up and the party is planning activities almost every weekend. This is the time to contact us and get involved. The goal for the Rockdale Republican Party next year at this time is to report a sense of gratification as the voters will have returned a conservative Chairman to run our County the way it was meant to be – For Rockdale County!

Dear Friends,

This week, the Senate convened for the second session of the 112th Congress. During the recess, I was able to visit the Georgia Capitol and speak to the state House and Senate, to meet with constituents and to speak to a variety of different business and community groups in the state. On Monday night, I held a <a title="https://iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=quorum_isakson-iq&crop=16534.12940842.6341466.15042720&redirect=http%3a%2f%2fisakson.senate.gov%2faudio%2f20120123TH.wav

Keystone XL Pipeline
As soon as the president announced last week that he was rejecting the construction permit for the KeyStone XL pipeline, I <a title="https://iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=quorum_isakson-iq&crop=16534.12940842.6341466.15042720&redirect=http%3a%2f%2fisakson.senate.gov%2fpress%2f2012%2f01-17-12%2520Keystone%2520Obama%2520Letter.html

Last Fall, I also sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to express his strong objections when the administration last year initially postponed a decision on the proposed Keystone XL pipeline until after the 2012 election. I will continue to do everything I can to support this critically important project, which would bring 70,000 barrels of crude to the U.S. from our strong ally Canada and at the same time, create thousands of American jobs.

State of the Union Address
On Tuesday, which marked the 1,000th day since President Obama’s Democrat majority in the Senate last offered a budget plan, the president delivered the annual State of the Union address to the nation with the theme of “fairness.” I took to the floor of the Senate in advance of the speech to discuss this failure to offer a budget and how it is unfair to the American people. Real “fairness” would be government doing what American families have had to do: sit around the kitchen table, prioritize spending, cut spending and stop borrowing money we can’t pay back.

When it comes to tax reform, we need a comprehensive approach. The president’s own commission, Simpson-Bowles, recommended that we do away with many of the current tax expenditures and tax deductions, lower the tax rate on our taxpayers and produce more income. That would bring capital off the sidelines and investment back to small business. We need a comprehensive approach, not a winners-and-losers approach to tax reform.

Additionally, if on the one hand, the president talks about energy security and wanting to create more jobs for Americans, and on the other hand, he rejects 20,000 jobs, which the Keystone XL pipeline would have brought about, and 70,000 barrels of crude from Canada, one of our best friends, then he is saying one thing and doing something else—that’s wrong for our country. We need leadership on energy security.

Debt Limit Increase Request
On Thursday, I voted in support of a resolution of disapproval on the president’s request to increase the debt limit by an additional $1.2 trillion. Even though the resolution passed the House last week by a vote of 239 to 176, the failed vote in the Senate now means that, under the Budget Control Act of 2011, the president’s requested debt increase of $1.2 trillion will go into effect because Congress has failed to pass a resolution of disapproval within 15 days of the president’s request.

Our country is experiencing a very serious financial crisis that has been felt by families and businesses across America. I find it very troubling that the president is asking to increase the nation’s debt limit when his Democrat majority in the Senate has failed to submit budget in more than 1,000 days.

What’s on Tap?

Next week, the Senate will begin debate on S. 2038, known as the STOCK Act that would prohibit insider trading by members of Congress and aides using information obtained through the course of their duties.

Sincerely,
Johnny Isakson

1/20/12

Dear Friend,

Yesterday the President once again chose political expediency over the best interests of our country and its future. In a purely political move, Obama formally rejected the Keystone XL Pipeline. In doing so, he destroyed the possibility of immediately creating 20,000 American jobs, along with the potential of 100,000+ jobs that would have been created as a result of the economic effects of the project.

We need a President who understands what America’s best interests really are! Take a stand today!

The President was quoted as saying that the XL Pipeline was “not in the best interest of our nation.” If creating American jobs, increasing America’s energy independence and creating a huge ripple effect in our struggling economy aren’t in our “best interest,” then I guess I don’t know what is. Here is one thing I know for sure….Barack Obama’s big-government, job-killing ideologies certainly aren’t in our best interests!

With Obama and his liberal allies pouring millions into Georgia, it is critical that the GAGOP continues our aggressive education and election programs across the state. Please consider contributing $25, $35, $50 or more to help our cause!

As everyday American citizens, we may not have the power to enact something like the Keystone XL Pipeline ourselves; however, we do have the power to place such responsibility in the hands of someone who will work for America’s REAL “best interest”…a new Republican President. It is crucial that we take the opportunity in November to change the course of our country. Join us today by visiting our website at www.gagop.org/contribute!

We have a long road in front of us before November, but I am confident that together, we will take back our America and elect Republicans from the top of the ticket to the bottom!

Best,

Sue P. Everhart, Chairman

P.S. If you would prefer to mail a contribution, please send it to the GAGOP at P.O. Box 550008 Atlanta, GA 30355. Thank you!

The Republican effort to win the newly remapped fourth congressional district has begun with a bid from Henry County church pastor Chris Vaughn.

Vaughn, 45, has been the senior pastor of The Landing church since 2008 and has lived in Rockdale County in the Meadowbrook subdivision since 2002. This will be his first time running for elected office.

“I want my children to have a better life than me,” Vaughn said, after attending the annual Rockdale NAACP and Chamber of Commerce MLK Breakfast. “I want to leave an inheritance and I don’t think that’s where we’re going right now. Not nationally, not in our districts.”

Although he has no prior experience in public office or government, he said his background as a senior pastor gives him relevant experience.

“I’m constantly dealing with people who want to do it the old way versus the new way,” he said. “It’s always trying to bring some level of agreement to the table.”

Dear Friends,

I’d like to start off by thanking each of you for sticking with us through another year. Though 2011 was an ‘off-election year,’ you would have never known it by watching the sights, sounds and activities of Georgia’s Republican grassroots throughout the past twelve months. It is often said that a winning effort begins with preparation, and if this past year was any indication, we are well on our way to great things in 2012!

At the Georgia Republican Party, we pride ourselves on our continuing efforts to grow our Republican ranks from the top of the ticket to the very bottom. We experienced a higher-than-normal turnover rate in the General Assembly this year, resulting in a flurry of Special Elections that ultimately allowed us to celebrate Republican victories in eight races, with a ninth GOP victory still to come on January 3rd. It was an honor to welcome the newest Republican members of the Georgia General Assembly, and I am thrilled to see what the future holds for our blossoming leaders.

Over the past year, we have also had the privilege to welcome dozens of local and county officials who have “seen the light,” as I like to say, and have affiliated with the Republican Party. From County Commissioners to Sheriffs to School Board members, and at each and every office in between, we have continued to welcome these leaders to the Georgia Republican Party with open arms.

Dear Fellow Georgians,

It’s hard to believe that another year is almost gone and that Christmas week is upon us. It is the time of advent (Anticipation and Hope) for us to prepare our hearts for the birth of the Savior. Christmas can be a time where there is a sense of wonder, beauty, and excitement. It is the music, the look of surprise on a child’s face, and the amazing food. It’s the companionship of family and good friends. It can be a time for reflection on the year past, and pondering on all that we’ve faced individually, and as a country. Most importantly it is the birth of Jesus Christ, which gives us focus for the year to come, and a promise for the future that we can place our confidence in. (For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6)

It is also Hanukkah for our Jewish friends. Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrated for eight days and nights. It starts on the 25th of the Jewish month of Kislev, which coincides with late November-late December on the secular calendar. The story of Hanukkah also fits the political culture of the United States. It’s underlying narrative recalls that of the Pilgrims: A persecuted religious minority, at great cost, breaks free of their oppressors. It wasn’t separatist Protestants seeking freedom from the Church of England in 1620, but Jews in the land of Israel triumphing over their Hellenistic overlord in 167–164 B.C., reclaiming and purifying their holiest site, the Jerusalem Temple. (reference from – The Wall Street Journal, The Story of Hanukkah Mr. Levenson, a professor of Jewish studies at Harvard Divinity School, is co-author with Kevin J. Madigan of “Resurrection: The Power of God for Christians and Jews” (Yale University Press, 2008).

Please enjoy the following Gwinnett GOP Year-End Update from Chairman Bruce LeVell:

Dear Fellow Republicans,

The Gwinnett Republican Party has had a very successful 2011, building excitement and enthusiasm that we will translate into “boots on the ground” in the effort to elect a Republican President in 2012, while holding and expanding on our local and state GOP seats. I hope that you have been able to join us for one of our monthly breakfast rallies, town hall meetings, or special events this year, and we have even more planned next year.

To kick off 2012 the right way, we are excited to have special guest Congressman Joe Wilson from South Carolina (of “You Lie!” fame during one of the President’s addresses to the House) for the Gwinnett GOP 2012 Kickoff Rally, taking place on Thursday night, January 12th at 7:30 p.m. at 550 Trackside, 550 N. Clayton Street in Lawrenceville, the site of our monthly breakfast rallies. Congressman Wilson will be joined by our very own Congressmen Rob Woodall and Paul Broun, as well as a host of other state and local elected officials. This will be an event you won’t want to miss! (Just prior to the 2012 Kickoff Rally, we will have our regular January county committee meeting at 550 Trackside at 7:00 p.m.)

Gilmer GOP Hosts 3rd Annual Christmas Dinner & 2nd Amendment Observance: Black Tie & Levi

On Dec 9th, The Gilmer Co. GOP held its third annual Christmas Dinner and 2nd amendment observance, a black tie and levi event. This year’s theme was The U.S. Constitution. Ninety-seven folks signed up and paid $15.00 a ticket to attend the event, held once again at the Cameron Hall Assisted Living Center in Ellijay. That wonderful facility pulls out all the stops for the quality of its food and the efficiency of its staff. A Cameron Hall employee, Raquel Bustos, after the pledge and a prayer, sang an opening rendition of “I’m Glad to be an American” that revved up the blood of the conservative diners and set an up beat pace for the dinner and program that followed.

The evenings program included tongue in cheek remarks by George McClellan, Gilmer Chairman, on how to recognize the differences between conservatives and liberals and how those differences came to be. Senator Steve Gooch offered a few brief remarks and introduced former Senator Chip Pearson who, in a solemn moment, eulogized the memory of our own political work horse Bess Connor, recently deceased. Chip then introduced the speaker of the evening Sue Everhart, whose remarks focused on the mission of the next year to defeat Barak Obama.

President Obama’s Approval Rating Sinks Among “Middle Class” Voters

Recent polling figures from Gallup show that President Obama’s Job Approval Rating among America’s “Middle Class” has fallen below 42% nationally, a 26-point drop since his inauguration. This is a very troubling figure for the President, who often claims to be a champion of middle class economic policies. Nationwide, many Independent voters self-identify in the “Middle Class,” and thus these figures spell a major problem for Barack Obama’s reelection hopes in 2012.

Oglethorpe County Republican Party Hosts Successful Toy Drive for Soldiers’ Families

Despite the poor economy and the struggles of many families in our communities, the Oglethorpe County Republican Party Toy Drive was a huge success. In partnership with the Georgia National Guard, the local party collected toys to be donated to the families of Georgia soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, which culminated at the party’s annual Christmas Pot Luck Supper. “This is an extremely worthy cause and it is the least that we can do. These men and women are fighting for our freedom overseas, expecting nothing in return. This is a way that we can show our support to their families at Christmas time—a lonely time for the soldiers and families alike,” said County Party Chair Kirk Shook. “This is one less thing these military families will have to worry about.”

The Georgia National Guard is estimating that they will have over 500 families to serve this year. Newly appointed Adjunct General Jim Butterworth was schedule to speak at the event, but was unable to attend because of a last-minute scheduling conflict. Program Kim Garrett expressed her gratitude, “We are overwhelmed by the amount of support we have received around the state. Oglethorpe County’s contribution of over 200 toys and 10 bicycles will be a big help. Your generosity means more than you know. It will go a long way!”

Dear Friends,

On Tuesday evening, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Middle Class Tax Relief & Job Creation Act. With members from both sides of the aisle coming together to support responsible, effective legislation, this bipartisan bill not only continues to ease the tax burden on the backs of America’s middle class, but does so through spending cuts – not tax increases on America’s job creators.

While I applaud Speaker Boehner, Leader Cantor and the House Republican Leadership for showing remarkable foresight with this legislation, I am extremely disappointed that President Obama has already made clear his intention to veto this bill. It is no surprise to any of us that the Campaigner-in-Chief has continued to put politics ahead of policy, but I find it remarkable that the President would openly and without hesitation throw the American people under the bus in favor of the opportunity to score cheap political points.

A Veterans Christmas Message

We are our fathers and mothers sons and daughters whom followed in their footsteps…..they served so we could witness to veteran’s sacrifices this very Holiday Season. This holiday season is the ideal time to rededicate yourself to that principal for which will define you and your place symbolized in the Christmas wreath..

The poignant Christmas wreath symbolizes so much about who we are as an American people, galvanized by a common belief that we are always there for one another and our country in the pursuit truth, freedom and trust in Almighty God. What a momentous time in history to be an American and citizen of this wonderful and blessed land, which requires our renewed dedication and fidelity of spirit as never before. We remember, honor, teach and inform as veterans and strive to sustain what we do as a freedom loving peoples symbolized by the Christmas wreath.

As we gather over the twelve-days of Christmas to recall those veterans at rest whom reside in private and National Cemeteries, we also thank the nearly 775,000 of Georgia’s Veterans we are so blessed to have amongst us. Remembering those who fought for our freedoms is a window into our own futures because you too will be remembered for what you did for others in this life. So honor it well and in the words of my Father, whom was an Infantryman and prisoner of war in Stalag 7A, Mossberg Germany, “do something for someone each day”.

ATLANTA – Today, Georgia Republican Party Chairman Sue P. Everhart released the following statement in response to Democratic National Committee Chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s recent assertion that the national unemployment rate has not increased under President Obama, when in reality it is nearly an entire percentage point higher (Currently 8.6%) than it was when Barack Obama took office in January, 2009:

“Yesterday’s comments by Chairman Wasserman Schultz show yet-again just how out-of-touch the Democratic Party is with the American people. With over 13 million Americans out of work and struggling to make ends meet this holiday season, I find it to be both misleading and offensive for Mrs. Wasserman Schultz to claim that President Obama is improving the economic conditions in our country. As with so many of the Democratic Party’s loudspeakers, the truth is that the rhetoric never matches the reality…

This week, the Georgia Republican Party was extremely saddened to hear of the loss of three very dear friends and supporters.

Mr. Dick Lowing of Gwinnett County, a long-time member of Gwinnett GOP and the Gwinnett Merit System Board, passed away late last week.

In Paulding County, the Republican family mourns the loss of Mr. James F. Swann. He was the father of Rocky Swann, who is the past Chairman of the Paulding County Republican Party.. The funeral will be on Thursday December 15, 2011 at 1:00, with visitation from 11:00 to 1:00, at Castellaw Funeral Home, 866 Church St SE Smyrna, GA

In addition, in the the Passing of Dr. Doyle Pratt, the Nation, State of Georgia and the Houston County Republican Party have lost a true friend and Patriot. Dr. Pratt took the lead role in the establishment of the Houston County Republican Party in 1964 and served as Chairman for two terms. He remained involved in the party supporting Republican Candidates for various offices for all these years. Additionally, Dr. Pratt was instrumental in getting Theodore (Ted) Waddle interested in politics that eventually led to him campaigning and being elected as a state Representative that served 18 years.

Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the families during these trying times. Each of these men will be missed dearly – May they rest in peace.

The Georgia Republican Party is fully committed to electing a Republican President in 2012. However, Victory won’t be achieved simply because we won the last elections. Victory can only be achieved by working hard each and every day to win the next elections. With President Obama committed to raising $1 billion for his reelection, we have a lot of work to do. A $1-billion campaign means about $1.858 million for every electoral vote, which works out to about $30 million here in Georgia alone.
